One Million Students Sign Up for Quranic Courses in Algeria

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Algerian minister of religious affairs said some one million students have signed up for Quranic courses in the country.

In remarks on the sidelines of a conference on Quran recitation schools in Algiers, Youcef Belmehdi said the courses are held in 18,000 Quranic schools across the country.

Highlighting the significance attached to Quranic education in Algeria, he said 50 provinces in the country have Quran recitation teaching boards.

He said the boards have between 5 and 25 members, some of whom have mastery over the 10 styles of Quran recitation.

Belmehdi further noted that 50,000 Quran learners took part in Quran memorization competitions in the country during the holy month of Ramadan (April).

During the opening ceremony of the conference, a number of the participants, including Abdul Latif Bu Azizi from Tunisia and Sheikh Hassan Bursu from Senegal were honored.

Algeria is a country in North Africa. Muslims make up about ninety-nine percent of the country’s population.
